EPIC MAN

What is the Epic Man?

The Epic Man gives a select group of people the chance to push their physical limits through a one-of-a-kind adventure, while raising funds for their favorite charities. Participants challenge themselves to “Be Epic”, which in turn inspires others to carry on the Epic message.

Our message: “Always Be Epic” represents the spirit and drive of those who challenge themselves through a fusion of fitness, lifestyle, culture, and inspiration. All participants have a burning desire to accomplish amazing and inspiring feats on their own terms.

Who is the “Epic Man”?

The Epic Man strives to realize potential, but at the same time sees no limits.
The Epic Man creates his own challenges.
The Epic Man accepts the challenges, and works hard to complete them.
The Epic Man does not consider the finish line to be the end, rather the start of the next adventure.
The Epic Man is humble.
The Epic Man knows how to have fun, and does not take himself too seriously.
The Epic Man will always be inspired.
The Epic Man cares about living to the fullest, which leads to healthy mind and body.

Recent Epic Man Adventures:

“You won’t do it.” Those were the fateful words that, in 2009, sparked the unlikely adventure of two friends (Will Thomas and Seth Bradbury), traveling by kayak (2.5 miles), bike (157 miles overnight), and foot (26.2 miles) from an island in Maine to the finish line of the Boston Marathon, in 24 hours...on no sleep. In 2010, dozens of other participants took on parts of the challenge and helped raise thousands of dollars for local charities. To top the 2009 challenge, the Epic Man 2010 was extended to include another kayak immediately following the Boston marathon across the Boston harbor, a cross-country flight to San Francisco, a sailing race, a skydive, and another marathon– all within a week.

After the 2010 Epic Man adventure, Seth Bradbury and Will Thomas used a majority of the funds raised to grant an “Epic Wish” to Josh Kennison, a young man in Maine born without arms or legs that dreamed of riding a bike. Josh worked with a specialist to create a custom fit bike and used it complete his own version of “Epic Man”, riding 70 miles from his home in Paris, Maine to Camp No Limits (a camp for children with limb loss, where Josh is a head counselor) to inspire campers and show them that anything is possible.

In 2011, the Epic Man will triple the number of participants from across the country who have committed to inspire others to Be Epic. A video camera ("Flip") is currently traveling from participant to participant (our version of the “torch”), to capture who they are and what Being Epic means to them. These amazing stories will be shared on Facebook and www.AlwaysBeEpic.com.

  • Grew up in Southern New Hampshire (Amherst, NH)
  • Graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2008 with a concentration of marketing and management.
  • Favorite activities: snowboarding, concerts, tennis, hiking, cycling, building a good fire, cooking a nice piece of meat, traveling and enjoying the outdoors.
  • Portfolio: strong to quite strong.
  • Considers himself a good 5.5 on a scale of 2-6.
  • Favorite place to vacation: Trehaus, Acadia National Park, Maine.
  • Favorite place to ride: Yet to be discovered.
  • Quote for Epic Man 2011: “Whatever you do, take care of your shoes.”

  • Why the Epic Man?

“I have always been an active person, whether it be playing competitive sports, or going out for a run. In early 2010, as my brother Seth Bradbury was training for the second annual Epic Man journey with Will Thomas, I began to take note and become inspired by their efforts. I slowly pushed myself on my daily runs and began to endure more and more. Before I knew it, I had registered myself for the Clarence DeMar full Marathon in September of 2010. With the goal of qualifying for the 2011 Boston Marathon, I continued to stay disciplined and physically push myself to attain a sufficient time. Eventually finishing the marathon in 3:01:44, I was ultra stoked to say the least. This personal journey I took has compelled me to once again step it up, make it happen and train / complete the 2011 Epic Man. The idea of pushing me to exceed my comfortable limits is applicable to most things I enjoy; whether it is running that extra mile, hiking up the hill to scope out a better line or trying new things, I see the Epic Man 2011 both a challenge and an opportunity.”

Why support the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation?

“As I train for TheEpicMan on a daily basis, I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to be physically fit and healthy enough to engage in such activities. Whether it be running or going out to ride, I can’t imagine myself not having the opportunity to do such ‘simple’ things. There have been countless people that have suffered incredible physical injuries and personal strife and the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation has dialed in on aiding these athletes in getting them back on their feet one way or another. With the idea of doing Epic Man for personal growth and redefining what the term ‘Epic’ is; I envision being ‘Epic’ as demonstrating athleticism with the thought of others in mind who can ultimately regain their love for such similar passions.”

    Jason Greenblatt

2011 the Epic Man team member and High Fives Non-Profit Foundation supporter:

  • Orginally from a coastal town of Bath, Maine but spent the better part of his youth in Conway NH. In Elementary school he would take half day Fridays off in the winters and go to the local mountain for ski programs. Jason thought this was the coolest idea ever.
  • Jason was given his first surfboard when he was 16, and learned how to surf in the winter water temps of New England's Atlantic. Now living in Southern California, his days in the water have increased by 10 fold, but for some reason he still likes the feeling of wearing booties in the winter months.
  • Jason’s first job out of college seemed like my dream job. 8 years later, he is still with the same company and living the dream. Jason also knows how fortunate he is to be able to say that.

  • Why the Epic Man?

“To be honest, I have never in my life had a single urge to run more than the hot water for my morning showers. When I would see Seth (Bradbury) doing these long runs back when we lived in South Boston, I just wasn't interested in even asking why. Don't get me wrong, I love being challenged by sports, nature, and a good time, but after seeing the past Epic Men challenge themselves through inspiration from others who have much greater challenges in life, it then hit me. It's not the marathon, or the 150 mile bike ride, or even the training that goes into putting such a physical and mental challenge on my body. It's the fact that I have the ability to be as Epic as I can now, so why the hell not. And if you can help someone overcome their own epic challenges through out the process, it was obvious to me. It just felt right to agree to the challenge at this point in my life.”

Why support the High Fives Non-Profit Foundation?

“The Epic Man will be the greatest physical accomplishment in my life thus far, and I want to be able to leverage that to raise money and help others bounce back from so much greater personal challenges. I recently found out about the High Fives Foundation after I got a call from my old roommate saying his best friend was in a life threatening ski accident. He mentioned that a former colleague of ours was a co-founder of this foundation who helps athletes recover from such injuries. It didn't take long to see the passion High Fives Non-Profit Foundation has to help others overcome major challenges and achieve goals that in my mind are beyond Epic. Stay strong Phil Hoban, Danny Toumarkine, and all the others that are challenging yourself to overcome massive physical set backs. I will be giving you long distance high fives through out my TheEpicMan experience. Always Be Epic.”
